Applying for a home loan with help from Don Taylor

When buying a home, applying for financing is very demanding for many people, but it doesn't have to be. I have close relationships with a lot of lenders in the Treasure Island area, and they've helped me learn some things that make the loan application process easy.

1 – Assemble a list of questions regarding your loan program

If you find that you do not totally comprehend the ins and outs of all the different programs, be sure to bring a list of questions. It is often hard to understand the characteristics of both fixed and adjustable rate mortgages. I or one of my lender contacts will be able to assist you with understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each.

2 – Determine when you want to lock

When you lock in the interest rate, your lender is sure to hold to the mortgage interest rates for the loan – most often at the time the loan application is submitted. By floating the rate, you can lock the rate anytime between the day you apply for the loan and issuance of closing documents. Buyers who choose to float presume that interest rates will dip in the near future. Click here to see the outlook for the next 90 days of interest rates.

3 – Decide if you want to pay additional points to reduce your interest rate

If you decide to pay additional points to lower the rate of your loan, you will pay for them in cash at the time of closing. Every point is 1 percent of the mortgage loan. If you're undecided on whether or not buying points is right for you, click here to use our points calculator.

4 – Compile your paperwork

Acquiring a mortgage loan requires lots of paperwork, so you should spend some time getting all your documentation together. Click here to see general information that goes on a loan application.
